Rigorous AND Fair Board Oversight (without Micromanaging)

Executive Directors Want It ~ Boards Need It

When speaking to Mikhail Gorbachev about nuclear arms reduction, Ronald Reagan quoted an old Russian proverb: “Trust, but verify.” It is not enough to simply trust the Executive Director, the Board must also verify that the ED is achieving the strategic goals of the organization while not acting unethically, illegally, or imprudently. Unfortunately, boards often accomplish this by reviewing the ED’s plans and decisions in detail. Such micromanagement is inefficient, ineffective, dispiriting and unfair.

In this workshop we will explore a better way for the Board to oversee the work of their organization, increasing both the quality and fairness of Board oversight, while simultaneously preserving the Executive Director’s ability to lead and make decisions.

You will discover how to strengthen board oversight and strategic leadership while strengthening the authority of the Executive Director.
